Ramadan 2024 – The Start of the Journey
At the start of Ramadan 2024, we spoke to Malak Serarfi, Solutions Manager at Flexhuis UK, to find out more about what this time means for her. Thanks Malak for sharing your experiences.
Why do you fast?
I fast because Ramadan is the fifth pillar of Islam which is an obligation for practised Muslims.
What does fasting means to you?
Ramadan is a time to repent and get spiritually closer to God. Fasting helps me reflect and be thankful for the small things we tend to take for granted such as drinking water and eating. Some people don’t get the chance to eat every day. After a long day of fasting, I am grateful to have food on the table and a family to share it with.
How do you break your fast at sunset? Do you have a particular food or drink that you always have?
I usually break the fast with water and dates.
What are you most looking forward to?
This is the holiest month of the Muslim calendar year. I look forward to getting spiritually closer to God, involved in more charity work and spending quality time with my family.
Do you have any special traditions or rituals that you follow during?
I tend to wake up early before the sunrise and have breakfast. Cook during the day with my family and gather around a nice meal for Iftar.
What are the main challenges?
Feeling fatigue and hunger at the end of the day.
How many times have you completed Ramadan?
20 years.
What would you do differently this year? How has your experience of Ramadan changed over time?
Be more consistent in waking and drinking/eating before sunrise. I find It helps me keep my energy levels up during the day.
Any advice for others completing?
Carry on with your daily routine and keep your mind occupied. Get in charity works if you can. Ramadan is all about, spirituality, sharing and charity.
